Grow Your Own Herb Garden

June 7th, 2009

Growing herbs in a garden has become very popular over the years, and for valid reasons. Herbs have a practical value and are extensively used in cooking. However, herbs aren’t just used for cooking, but are also grown for their beauty and pleasant aroma.

An important part of herb gardening is that you dry the herbs before use, especially if you plan to use them for cooking. First the tops of the leafy herbs have to be cut, then washed and hung up for the water to evaporate. The stems are then tied together and hang up in a paper bag to dry. After a few weeks the herbs are removed. The leaves are then crushed into flakes, dried out in the oven and finally stored in a glass jar for use. Let’s look at some popular herbs:

Lavender has a beautiful aroma and is used in many scented products such as candles, and also to improve the smell in linen chests.

Mint is a very simple to grow herb and is good to use in everything from mint jelly to mint julep drinks.

A very common garden herb is basil. Dark Opal, which has dark red leaves and light pink flowers, and regular green basil are great additions to any garden and often used soley as decoration. Basil isn’t just used for its aesthetic value, it is also used for extra flavour in tomato juices and pastes.

Two herbs that appear in nearly everyone’s herb garden are sage and thyme.  Both herbs are used for flavouring turkey, soups, pork, chicken and other meats. Sage is also often grown just for its beautiful blue spikey flowers.

Chives are visually petite, resembling a blade of grass. However, they are much stronger than they look, and are in fact a very hardy herb.  Their sturdiness is what makes chives a perfect plant for herb gardening, especially if you don’t really have the time for growing a herb garden. Chives are perfect for use in sauces and salads.

Other herbs you could grow are: sweet marjoram (flavours fish, lamb,  soups), chervil (egg dishes), sesame (flavours bread, crackers), and dill (flavours meats and used in pickles).

Growing a herb garden allows you to use herbs for their aroma, in your cooking and for their beauty. You’ll also benefit when you grow your own, by having fresher herbs than what you could buy at the local supermarket.

Outdoor Patio Furniture

May 28th, 2009

Summer is undeniably one of the most loved seasons of the year. The balmy weather makes you feel flexible in mind and spirit and leaves you lively and light-hearted. You might be tempted to make the best of the time by getting some new outdoor patio furniture. As winter dwindles to an end, your old things start to look ignored and neglected.  Isn’t that a spot of rust on your chair? If you are agreeing to this, then its time to revamp your patio with some new furniture.

Furniture for your garden patio comes in assortments of styles, sizes, designs, and materials, and if you know where to look, you can even get them at a lower price. Keep the vagaries of the wet season in mind when you are hunting for them. You need durable equipment that can withstand both heat and rain, and has a longer lifespan with low, or no, maintenance requirement.

Materials like aluminum and stainless steel make ideal materials for patio furniture. From tasteful bar high-chairs to ordinary stools, they’re available in a number of sizes and shapes. If your buying decision is influenced by how hard-wearing they are, then the perfect choice would be wrought-iron furniture. Not only do they look traditional with a slight Victorian twist, they also incorporate designs that would make your garden patio look luxurious.

If you want to blend your furniture perfectly with nature, then you better go for wood instead, with classic looking furniture such as wooden garden benches. The color of wood is naturally earthy and this heightens the elegance of your landscaped garden patio as well as blends naturally with the surrounding plant life. It requires a lot of hard work before you find this material for your garden furniture. To make them weather-proof, you would have to think of applying the right wood preservatives and coatings.

When garden furnishings are made of wicker, you can expect them to be resistant to any kind of weather and they blend naturally to the landscape too. Originally plant fibers, wickers are treated to make them durable for multipurpose use. Wicker is known to resist both wet and dry season without decreasing its quality, thus, making it the best furniture for the garden variety. When buying garden patio furniture, it is wise to buy the complete set and not one by one. The savings that you get from buying the whole lot at once is enough to make you consider the idea.

Lawn Mower Buying Tips

May 27th, 2009

Warning, do not allow the attractive advertisement to suck you into buying that state of the art, feature-rich ride on lawn mower without diligently researching matters prior to buying a lawn mower. So before you begin burning that hard-earned money, make certain you have an idea of what you’re looking for before you buy.

As you probably all ready know, lawn mowers come in a huge variety of sizes, types and price ranges which will take a bit of diligent research before purchasing, you don’t want to buy an unsuitable mower. When measuring up your needs to what is available on the market, there are a few aspects to vigorously examine, such as the contour as well as proportion of your yard, what you can afford, how long your mower is expected to last and possibly your own mechanical knowledge, as all mowers require periodic upkeep.

Firstly, start your search by taking a careful look of your lawn. If you’ve thought of replacing the outdated mower, you may already possess a fairly decent idea of what will work for you, because you’ve already managed to work in your garden. If you’ve just moved into a house, you probably have an idea how many square feet of lawn space you own and needs mowing. This is important since suggestions for different mowers are partially based on garden volume calculated in square feet.

Here are a few hints for conducting your research, which may not just save time, but the annoyance of regretting a compulsive purchase.

Take a slow stroll around your lawn, find out whether it’s terrain is smooth while looking for shaded areas which are often wet, especially after watering. Additionally check to confirm if there are trees with surface roots laying exposed in addition to other obstacles like boulders, areas of jagged soil, etc. Fixtures like planting boxes, shrubs, patios, fences or other barriers that can render movement a tad tedious also should be deliberated as does the problem that comes from mowing on an incline.

Next item to think on is whether you really enjoy working in the garden or maintaining the yard because you’ll have to be comfortable getting your hands dirty when you look after it. Don’t forget you’ll also need to scrape off cut grass sticking to the metal or painted sections of your lawn mower. Then naturally there’s climbing downward upon your knees to remove it’s blade and sharpen and ensure it is balanced. Nonetheless, a high end lawn mower will survive for several years if it is kept up decently, however a badly looked after one won’t survive too long.

Lastly, the second best part you must assess is the budget as the correct type of mowing equipment might be expensive but can be a good investment. These are some of the simple questions you first need to consider before buying a garden lawn mower. It may in fact be smart for you to consider the upsides and downsides of the predicament, so that you don’t make the mistake of spending money on equipment that could just provide a home for cobwebs inside your garage or supply closet.

Cedar Garden Furniture

May 21st, 2009

Often, cedar garden furniture is the furniture that is chosen to place in many outdoor areas, such as decks or patios, because of the natural beauty of the North American hardwood. Because of its steadiness and beauty, clear grade western red cedar is a common type used and produced throughout the United States. Most people worry about how well their garden furniture can stand up to the sun and rain.

As people are choosing their outdoor furniture, they also need to consider whether it needs to withstand snow, sleet, and hail - as many people who live in the northern hemishere have to do.

For many, western red cedar, and its natural preservatives against rot and decay make it a perfect solution. The first major piece of furniture to come out of this type of wood was the Adirondack Chair and it was a definite commercial success among customers. The federal government even saw the value of cedar after these chairs came out, and began making plans to include cedar material in park benches.

Unfortunately, the Great Depression of the 1930s gave the government plenty of time to test these benches, as many people were put to work making them through the WPA. This era, which caused much unemployment throughout the nation, saw the formation of the WPA, as President Roosevelt designed it to give jobs to the unemployed. Many young men went into the forests at the time and cut down the cedar trees so that they used for things like park benches.

Cedar also was used quite heavily in the making of chests because the wood kept the materials and the chest safe from mildew or mold. Sailors often declared that the cedar chest was their friend on long trips. Funeral directors were quick to use cedar for their coffins, too, along with pine. Being able to prevent diseases from spreading was one perceived benefit by many doctors in England. Because of the many abilities and uses of cedar, the wood has been used in many products.

The landscaping of the outside of many people’s homes today is drastically improved by the beauty of cedar garden furniture. Many patios and gardens are inlaid with cedar to match the natural beauty of their patio furniture made of the same wood. Many people are able to find items like serving trays and carts, and other accessories that are made from cedar as well with the stores Wal-Mart and Target being good places to find such items. For a reasonable price, you can purchase cedar garden furniture from Sears, J.C.Pennies, and other department stores. You can also buy outdoor patio furniture online, with tremendous savings possible.

More Gardening Tips

June 27th, 2008

I would like to share some tips on gardening with you, which I have found good.  The internet, gardening clubs, books, magazines and your local nursery could prove to be invaluable resources to get more information on gardening. What is the top information that you need to know: amount of sunlight the plot is likely to have, tips on fertilizers, mulch and soil management. What is the other information that you need to know? Firstly, what types of tools including the kind of tiller and watering systems which are required to get you started.

Tip #1: Pull out the paper and start planning your garden because the time this will save will be huge.  Keep the plan in front and call a friend to discuss the whole matter. A second opinion helps. Points of consideration: its appearance; the distance between the garden and the hose and sprinklers, if any. Of course any thing that comes to mind.

Gardening Tip #2: Make sure that you prepare the soil correctly. This factor can come between you and the success you make out of your garden. One of the important points of consideration is that all plants may not grow well in the same kind of soil. Their needs vary. Use organic fertilizers if you wish to retain the natural aroma of the food when you are growing vegetables and herbs. Wooden chip mulch or any good compost is better than ordinary fertilizer.

You could easily have a backyard compost heap. It is a blessing when it starts to provide you with the returns.  Though fresh home brew compost is an excellent source of nutrition for your vegetable and herb garden, it can well be completely unrealistic. If you are looking for an alternative to home compost mixture, mulch is your choice but make sure that they are of softer woods like pine or redwood since these woods break faster. Mulch, compost or fertilizer, ensure that they are all mixed well.

Gardening Tip 3: when you have the soil all prepared it is very smart to lay out the plants on top of the soil before planting them to get a good look at how it’s going to turn out just in case you need to make any last minute changes.  I firmly believe it is wise to plant plants together that have similar characteristics.  Plants with larger spread should be planted together. You can see all the plants if you plant taller plants at the back with shorter ones in the front.

Gardening Tip #4: Never forget to water your garden. For a big house, keeping your garden in ship shape is a tough task. An automatic watering system is a wise alternative, if you want your garden to grow on its own. Your automatic watering system can start from a huge sprinkling system to a small timer which is attached to the hose. Gardening can be one of the most rewarding experiences – providing you with shade, beauty and at times food!
