Can any one explain how to sharpen a chain saw?
I have tried using a small round file for the teeth and a flat file for the little curved bits. I cuts better but keeps veering off to one side or the other. New blades work fine??
If it cuts better than it did dull, you are halfway there. The trick to not having the chain veer off to the side is to sharpen the left hand and right hand teeth the exact same amount. I give each tooth the same amount of strokes. I use 2 strokes on each tooth unless the chain is very dull. But the trick is to take off the same amount of material on each tooth. I use a file guide to help hold the correct angle on the file. And make sure you hold the file flat. Take the chain to a chain saw dealer to have it ground. That will even it back out for next time. It takes some practice but you can soon be good at it. Just remember to use the same number of strokes on each tooth and on each side. Do all the teeth on one side, then turn the saw around in the vise and do all the opposite teeth. The flat file to lower the rakers only needs to be done about once every 5 sharpenings. Good luck.
