When it comes to home improvements that add value to your house, renovating the kitchen is usually at or near the top of everyone's list. The kitchen is such an integral part of the home that any changes to it affect everyone in the household, not just the person who does most of the cooking. Kitchen renovations don't just add to the value of the house, they also make the house more enjoyable to live in.
Unfortunately, you effectively lose your kitchen while it's being renovated. Unless you're lucky enough to have a second kitchen in the house, you'll quickly discover how important the kitchen was to your everyday living. Here are some tips to help you survive a kitchen renovation.
* Find a new sink to use. Most kitchen renovations include the installation of new cabinets or a new countertop. When the old stuff is torn out, you'll lose the sink. This is perhaps the hardest part of a kitchen renovation, because the kitchen sink is normally used several times a day in the average household. Being without a sink is a real hardship, so before starting the renovation make sure you know which sink you're going to use in its place. There may be a bathroom sink close by, or maybe a laundry sink. (Choose the bigger sink if you have a choice.) Place the things that you normally have around the kitchen sink -- dish soap, dish cloths, scrubbing aids -- near the new sink.
* Forget the dishwasher. Unless you have a portable dishwasher, expect to wash things by hand. Grab yourself disposable utensils and plates to minimize the dishwashing, it'll be a lot easier. Use plastic glasses for drinking, too.
* Keep the fridge running. Unlike the stove and dishwasher, your refrigerator can simply be moved to another part of the house and plugged into a different outlet. So at least you can keep milk and other important drinks and foods cold.
* Move things out of the kitchen. The kitchen will be dirty and dusty during the renovation, especially if there's drywall work being done. Move everything you can far away from the kitchen. Don't just stick it in the eating area, it'll get dirty there, too. Close doors if you can in order to keep the dust out of the rest of the house. (But don't be surprised if you have to clean your furnace filter at the end of the renovation.)
* Use your microwave. Your microwave will work anywhere in the house. Buy foods that can be easily prepared in a microwave oven. A lot of pre-cooked foods are available these days that just need a bit of warming.
* Be prepared to eat out. There are times when you just won't want to eat at home, not when the kitchen is in such a mess. Don't be surprised to find you eat out much more than normal, so put some extra money in the budget for that situation.
These tips will definitely help you survive the dreaded kitchen renovation. It's worth the aggravation, though -- a new kitchen is a great improvement to anyone's home!
