How do I find out what kind of starter I need for my lawn mower?
I have a craftsman lawn mower but I don't know what year or model it is. It is a 42" cut with a 12.5hp ic briggs and stratton motor. It will not turn over when I try to start it, there a sparks coming from around the starter. Do I need a new starter or could it possibly be from where it got wet in the rain earlier this week. It has no hood and the tarp blew off so it was exposed to the rain. If I need a new starter how do I know what to get? I can't find a part number anywhere.

There is a model, code and serial number on a plate on the motor. This is what they will need to find the correct starter for you mower. You might try slightly tapping on the starter. It may just be stuck. Tap lightly a couple or three times and see if that helps. In the south a new starter usually runs about 125.00. Hope this helps.
