A couple dog grooming questions?
Hi,
We purchased a puppy in June (hes now one year old) and had some grooming questions. Hes right about at the time where he needs a hair cut, and a bath. The issue is that he is ABSOLUTLEY TERRIFIED of loud noises . That leaves an electric trimmer out of the question, but he loves being brushed. A friend told us there is a brush-cutter thing out there where as you brush, it cuts his hair. Is this real? If so, what is it called? Also, is there a "shedless" shampoo treatment available? Where can I find this as well? Thank you! (By the way, hes a German Shepard- Chow Chow mix.)
Oh yes, I probably should have mentioned we already looked at groomers, but were just exploring some other cheaper do-it-yourself options before we go with one groomer ![]()
Yeah, he gets terrified when I sigh, or shut my drawer... he goes to his "hiding spot" every time...haha. So a groomer would probably be our best option then, right?
You should try to identify which loud noises your dog is scared of.
Most dogs that are scared of noises are only fearful of one or two things- like thunder and gunshots- but not every loud noise.
It is possible that he wouldnt mind the noise of a clipper.
In saying that, though- your dog is not a breed that should be clipped, anyway. German Shepherds and Chow Chows both have a double coat, which is not typically clipped, and the Chows are Spitz dogs, which should never be clipped. Spitz coats should easily brush out tangles and the hair should not mat as it does in other breeds.
I dont know about a 'shedless' shampoo- that doesn't sound natural and it could harm your dogs coat.
To get as much out of your dogs coat as possible you should either take him to a groomer for a wash- or do it yourself at a doggy wash hydrobath- as long as there is a blowdryer to dry your dog's coat.
Wash your dog, then condition the coat and wash the conditioner out before blow drying your dog. The conditioner will help make the hairs heavier, which makes the dead hairs much easier to remove with the dryer.
You might have to spend a bit of time with the dryer removing the dead hair from the coat- use it at a distance at first, and then use one of the attachments to get in closer and remove the 'webbing' from the hair.
You will be surprised at how much hair you can remove from your dogs coat with just the blow dryer.
If you act nervous around the dog- even if it is anticipating his reaction to the noise of the dryer, etc, and if you baby him as he is being washed- which will only reinforce his idea that bathtime is 'scary' time, then it is a much better idea to take him to the groomers for his wash.
The tools that you are thinking of are called 'stripping' tools. They do strip a decent amount of your dogs coat off, but I would not recommend this for your dog. They are used primarily for long, flowing coated dogs, like spaniels, rather than double coated dogs.
I would recommend a comb, a slicker brush, and a furminator for your dog.
