Can I use a piece of steel to block the discharge chute on my lawn mower for mulching?
A mulch plug is not available for my mower. Can I put a piece of steel over the chute to stop it from discharging the leaves and grass or does it have to be a piece that follows the curvation on the deck around the blades? I have Gator mulching blades on the mower already.
You can close off the discharge chute with anything that is tough enough to deflect the grass clippings and does not interfere with the blade. I used an old rubber mud flap and attached it to the exterior of the deck. It has been working just fine for three years now. I had to put mine on the outside because it is too thick to go inside; not enough blade clearance. You could probably go to the inside with an old tin can split open and secured with pop-rivets. It should have plenty of clearance, since it's so thin.
