We're looking to build a fountain, what size pump do we need? (Dimensions inside)?
Not sure if fountain is the right word, just a large rock with a hole in the top so water can spill out of the whole over the front of the rock. It will be approx. 7 feet tall, spillway approx. 2-3 feet wide. How many GPH pump do we need?
There are several suppliers of pumps for water features online. I suggest you do a web search and check them out. Almost all of them provide customer service in terms of helping them to select pumps and other items needed for various types of water features. You have to be sure you choose a pump that has the right capacity at the pressure you need to reach the 7 foot height plus friction losses.
I guess, based on one I recently purchased, it would be 1500 to 2000 GPH.
From past experience, I would also suggest you get a mag-drive pump. They usually are superior in construction quality, efficiency and long life.

A pump is one of the most significant features of an artificial pond. In the absence of a pump, there will not be any moving water, which may result in a marsh. A pump is necessary for circulating and filtering water in a pond. Usually, it is recommended that the pond water should be circulated at least once every two hours. This prevents the accumulation of mosquito larvae over the stagnant water surface. Moreover, it is advisable to determine the quantity of water in a pond and get a pump that pumps at least half that volume every hour. In other words, the gallons per hour rating, or GPH, should be 50% that of the total pond volume.
Pond pumps are electrical devices and require a water-resistant cord. The cord may be concealed between a pond and an outdoor electrical outlet. Pond pumps are installed under water, and normally do not generate any distracting noises. If a pump is supposed to house both fish and waterfalls, then the pump rating (GPH) should be increased.
Determining an appropriate pump for waterfalls is difficult because these pumps have two ratings, GPH and maximum waterfall height. The height of a waterfall is generally measured from the top of a pump to the top of a waterfall or a stream.
A rule of thumb that is normally applied is that each inch of width of a channel will require an extra 100 GPH. A smaller pump with a large head, and preferably with an adjustable flow control, is required in order to feed water into a statue or fountain.
A multi-purpose pump is the best choice for a person who is not sure which pump to select. Magnet-driven multi-use pumps typically have mechanical pre-filters containing a special sponge mesh for trapping bulky debris. They also have adjustable flow control, built-in fountain with several fountainheads, and diverter valves to split the output stream into multiple devices. They do not require a coolant and consume less electricity. It is recommended to place pond pumps at the opposite end of a waterfall or a fountain in order to allow maximum amount of circulation.
