I have a JCB petrol strimmer and cant release the spool?

Petrol stimmer with a push in and rotate release for the strimmer spool. Alas I cannot now release the sppol as the knurled plastic head just rotates and doesn't release. Is there any way of getting it to release without breaking it? I have locked the spindle and tried pressing it very hard down and rotating it but to no avail. Any help gratefully appreciated. In fact some understanding of the mechanism to release and lock the spool may be helpful in finding a way to get it off!

Spray it with release oil, like WD-40? Keep wiggling it about?
