Lawn Mower Starter Cord

Can I replace my lawn mower's pull cord? Easily?

My lawn mower pull/starter cord broke late last fall and I need to replace it this spring. Is this something I can do myself or should I take it to a repair shop? From some basic online research, it sounds as if the toughest part is re-setting the recoil tension after replacing the line. I'm reasonably handy (can change a light switch or a faucet), but not a pro.

a lawn mower shop should fix it for around 10.00 or so its not hard to do just tricky first remove the shroudfrom the engine second remove the old string do not remove the plastic pulley from the metal housing third wind up the plastic pulley against the spring not all the way though leave about two turns then insert new string in plastic pullely make sure theirs a knot in rope that will not pull threw hole and put string threw hole in metal shroud put handle on string and your done string will rewind you can use a screw driver to wedge against plastic pullely and the shroud to keep it from turning while tying the knots where saftey glasses recoil springs are nasty if it gets out

When you decide to seed a new lawn the first thing to consider is whether you want to use seed or lay turf. Although seeding a lawn is a little more work it is cheaper and you will end up with a stronger lawn. You can also choose from a  wide range of different grass seeds so you can be sure that you will have grass that is suitable for the conditions in your area.

If you choose to use seed, when is the best time to sow your lawn? You will need relatively warm conditions and a reasonable amount of rainfall so that you do not have to continually water your new seedlings so the Spring or early fall is probably best. In the Summer conditions are usually too hot and dry in most areas so this would not be a good choice.

Different kinds of grasses grow at different rates so the time it takes for your new grass to be ready to walk on will be dependent on the type and the mixture of lawn seed that you use. You'll also want to consider what type of grass seed you require. Seeds specially developed for sunny or shady areas are available.

Preparing Your Site

Before you seed your lawn you must prepare the site properly. The spot you have selected should be dug carefully and the stones removed and big clods of earth broken up. Rake over the area and compress lightly with your feet. The surface can then be scraped lightly to make grooves for the seeds.

Methods of Seeding the Lawn

There are two techniques used to seed a lawn, manually and by the use of a machine. To use a machine, weigh out the amount of seed blend needed for your area then place half into the machine and seed by moving up and down the area in strips. As you get to end of every strip, to avoid over seeding, you could place plastic sheeting on the ground or close the holes in the machine. You might use sticks set into the ground or string to guide you. At this point place the remainder of the seeds into the seeding machine and, operating at right angles to the initial lines, finish seeding the lawn.

If you are seeding the lawn by hand it is a good plan to divide the area into parts of a square yard by means of cord and sticks. Work out the amount of grass seed you need for each segment, weight this out and add to a small pot. Make a note of approximately how much this is so that you don't need to repeat the weighing each time. Evenly seed the first segment, sowing the seeds in each directions so that they're distributed evenly. Now restock the container to approximately the same height as before and seed the next segment. Continue until the whole area is done.

When the entire area has been seeded rake over gently and irrigate completely.Throughout the following week to two weeks ensure that you water on a regular basis if it doesn't rain. The seedlings will start to sprout in the course of this time.

Mowing Your Newly Seeded Lawn

When the lawn seedlings are roughly 6 cm tall you may mow the grass for the first time preferably with a rotary lawn mower. Carefully collect lawn clippings or make use of a rake and be careful not to disturb the new seedlings. Continue to water regularly and fertilise once or twice a year to give your new lawn the very best conditions so that it grows to be green and healthy.
