Greenhouse Rack

August 21st, 2010

How early can you start growing seed in an outdoor greenhouse in Pennsylvania?

Was considering buying one of those Portable Miniature greenhouses (5 shelf rack covered with the thick plastic covering) on wheels.

Would like to use it for starting flower/vegetable seeds but wasn't sure when to put it outside (how cold is too cold?)

if you place the greenhouse along the south wall of a house so that it has protection you could probably place it out there in march. but if you have a cold frame with ground heat cables you could start up in February.
also it depends on the type of seeds you are starting
peas are very cold hardy as are some perennials.
all in all you don't gain much with a little greenhouse as far as seedling production because of the variable temperatures that you will have in the small space.

We all know that our cars have a huge impact on the environment. Of course it would be great if we all rode our bikes to work and walked to the grocery store, but for most of us, that's just not going to happen. So how can we go green without compromising our lifestyle? Here are some tips to save gas and be more green with your car:

Green car tip: Don't change your oil more often than you need to!

We often hear it recommended that you change your oil every 3,000 miles or 3 months, whichever comes first. But changing the oil at much longer intervals, such as 5,000 or 7,500 miles. By changing your oil more before following their advice, check your car's manual. Many car manufacturers recommend than you need to, you could be wasting one of our most valued resources. Be green by using only the oil you need.

Green car tip: Are you sure you need a new car, even if it is a hybrid?

The fact that automotive manufacturers are making an effort to be greener (thanks in a large part to the pressure of public opinion) is wonderful! However, before you decide to chuck your old car for the latest technology, take some time to consider the impact of purchasing a new vehicle (even a hybrid) versus continuing to use your old one. The more demand there is for new cars, the more cars are manufactured; the more cars manufactured, the greater the impact on the environment. Not to mention that the money you will save on gas might be offset by a higher car payment. Just something to think about!

Green car tip: Do you really need all that stuff in your car?

Believe it or not, the extra weight you are carrying around by having unnecessary items in your car can affect your fuel consumption because it weighs down your car. Do a little spring cleaning to remove non-essential heavy items out of your trunk. However, if you are carrying luggage, sports equipment, or other large items, put as much of it as you can in the car or trunk rather than on the roof rack. Racks and the items on them can cause your car to work harder due to wind resistance. Not only will you be less cluttered, but you will save gas!

Green car tip: Want to save up to $500 and reduce your gas usage by almost 150 gallons per year?

Pump up your tires! Most people don't keep their tires inflated properly. This added drag translates to needing more gas to keep your car going the same speed. Next time you stop for a fill-up, fill up your tires as well! Experts recommend checking your tire pressure on a monthly basis. What an easy way to save gas!

Green car tip: Are you the boss? Consider letting some or all of your employees telecommute one day a week.

Are you not a boss but you have one? Ask about telecommuting. Here's how to present it: "Ms. Jones, I'm sure you're as concerned about the environment as I am. By letting me work from home one day each week, you will be helping me to save almost 15% of my annual gasoline consumption and car emissions. Can we try it for a month to see how it goes?" Think about it: There are 52 Fridays in a year. If you could refrain from driving each Friday, you would be driving 14.2% fewer days per year. The percentage of gas savings goes up even more if you typically drive more on the weekdays than you do on the weekends. By implementing a telecommuting workplace, you are contributing to a greener world and saving gas for you and everyone else in your company!

Use these easy steps to save gas and save the environment!
