Buying a lawn mower tip: If you have a small to medium size lawn,
consider purchasing a garden mower
that comes with a grass catcher attached, it'll save you having to rake
up afterwards.
Lawn Care Tips
- Make sure your
garden lawn mower is in good working
condition and that the blade is sharp. Take it to your local lawnmower
service centre and get them to give it the once over if it's not
cutting well.
- If it's the
first cut of the season don't set your
lawn mowers blades too low, this can weaken the growth and promote the
invasion of weeds.
- After you've
finished cutting the lawn use a garden
fork and dig it
into the grass every six inches or so. Push the fork down to a depth of
six inches and rock the handle back and forth. This will get air to the
roots as well as provide drainage holes, leading to improved growth and
a healthy lawn.
- To further
improve drainage sprinkle horticultural
sand with some sieved soil (90% sand / 10% soil) across the lawn and
into the holes you made with the fork above.
- Moss may look
good when it's green but can look terrible later in the year when it
turns brown. Apply some moss killer
and rake out after the time specified. Apart from making your lawn look
better all year round it will allow more air around the base of the
grass, keeping it healthier.
- Patch up any
worn areas using grass seed. First rough
up the area with a rake and if you don't have many areas to do, buy
small patch repair kits to save money.
- If you have a
lawn that has been exposed to
water logging then you should think about giving it a feed, this will
give it the balance of nutrients it needs. If you use a
granular
feed you'll need to water it after to dissolve the granules.
- Once you've
completed the above work try to stay of
the grass for a couple of weeks to give it the best chance of becoming
the lush green lawn you're after.
